About
Agak Agak is Malay for 'more or less'. This is what Cynthia's grandmother told her on the phone when she was calling to ask how much of an ingredient to add to a traditional Sarawak dish. Agak Agak represents the secret ingredient of Malaysian cooking - the people. It is the people who have lived and learned the local ingredients who know the right techniques to cook authentic Malaysian food. And Cynthia is one of those people. It is her meticulous cooking standards and respect for the cuisine that make Agak Agak the most delicious and authentic Malaysian food in Auckland.
The Team
Quality is the guiding principle of Agak Agak Food. Quality when it comes to the food itself and quality in the type of people who make the food. And these people are family. They care about presentation, environment and their customers.
We use fresh and authentic ingredients
We have discovered the best local ingredients and the most amazing flavours and combined everything to bring you authentic Malaysian street food.
Meet Cynthia
Cynthia Sim, was born and raised in Sarawak, Malaysia, and is the founder of Agak Agak Food here in New Zealand. The truth is, she didn't know how to cook Malaysian food when she lived there in her teens. But she knew exactly where to go to eat the most delicious specialities of the many regions in Malaysia. She would even drive 2-3 hours to another city on a Saturday morning to try a speciality dish only found in that city. It wasn't until she came to New Zealand that she realised how much she missed those traditional flavours. That is when she had no choice but to teach herself to cook Malaysian food. But not just any Malaysian food - it had to be the authentic speciality dishes she used to enjoy.
Many years and phone calls with her mom and Grandmother later - she has perfected authentic Malaysian street food. She brings a slice of her home to yours with every dish she creates. Each one representing an experience she had when living in Malaysia. It is her absolute pleasure to see you enjoy her food.
Meet Sam
Sam was born in Selangor Malaysia and moved to New Zealand at 4 years old. In the short time she was in Malaysia she developed an exclusive taste for authentic Malaysian cuisine. She won't eat anything less than Malaysian food. Which makes her perfect for the role of quality control for Agak Agak Food. Nothing goes past her without the taste test of authenticity.
Meet Abdul Qayyum (Qoi)
" I was born and raised in Shah Alam (A city boy), my dad from Negeri 9 & mother from Terengganu where both areas had lots of signature malaysian food. I had a big family that liked to put on big gathering every weekend to eat together while watching football or badminton.
After I graduated in a Bachelor of Accountancy from Massey Uni, I worked part-time in two Malaysian restaurants in Auckland before I joined Agak Agak Food team. Thats when I realised my passion for being in the kitchen cooking and preparing authentic Malaysian street food. I love making all the different dishes of Agak Agak Food for all our great customers. "
